Can You Really Love Something TOO Much?

Savannah went to get her favorite "grandma blanky" out of the dryer the other day, only to find it looking like this. She was devastated! This blanky was made by her Grandma and given to her at birth. It has been with her every night without fail for almost 5 years now. It was there to comfort her when she was tired, scared, lonely, sick or hurt. It has been dragged through dirt and mud and washed too many times to count. Shortly after Savannah came home from the hospital, her wild and crazy brother Samuel decided to bite it with his teeth and drag it away from her. That's when the first tear happened and I did my first repair on the beloved yellow blanky.

Today, I am afraid that the blanky may be well beyond repair since the fabric seems to be degrading and shredding. But how do you let go of something that is loved so much? Savannah is still happy to sleep with it, even in its current condition! Grandma, do you have enough of this fabric left over to make another one?

We have gone through a few of those over the past 15 years. Each child has had their "special" blankie and it's never easy to watch them go. Of my 5 kids, I have only been able to salvage one of the overly-loved blankies and store it away. The rest we had to throw away - they were so dirty and stained! We did let our Kamryn go to the store and choose her own fabric for the new blankie, that seemed to help with the goodbye process.

Seth had a beloved blankie that had to go to blankie heaven (my cedar chest) after 5 1/2 years of love. I made him a new one with his favorite things on it - frogs. It's not loved quite as well, but it 's been a good substitute. Good luck!
